Dr. Lohner sees patients from Bryn Mawr, Main Line, Rosemont, Philadelphia, and other cities throughout Pennsylvania for endoscopic surgery.
Endoscopy is a surgical practice in which a doctor uses a miniature probe (endoscope), which contains a light and video camera to display an area being operated upon. The probe is inserted through a small incision near the surgical site, and the surgeon sees the resulting image on a screen in the operating room.
Endoscopy is a relatively new technique in the plastic surgeon’s arsenal. It is most widely known as one of the elements of arthroscopic orthopedic surgeries, but new applications have broadened its uses and advantages to the field of cosmetic surgery.
A few of the many positive aspects of using the endoscopic technique for plastic surgery include smaller incisions, faster recovery time and reduced scarring. Since a surgeon can observe the surgery site internally without opening the skin completely, smaller cuts can be made while obtaining the same results. Also, some procedures that traditionally required overnight hospital care can now be performed on an outpatient basis, saving money on hospital stays. It is important to note that when a surgeon employs an endoscope, he still must use traditional surgical instruments like scalpels and forceps to perform the procedure. However, he can make his incisions with much greater precision and accuracy.
Cosmetic procedures that can benefit from endoscopy are abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), breast augmentation, facelift, and forehead lift. For example, during a breast implant operation a surgeon can better evaluate the placement of the implants. Reconstructive procedures that are enhanced by endoscopy are flap surgeries, placement of tissue expanders, sinus and septum surgeries, and carpal tunnel treatment.
