Chin surgery, or mentoplasty, reshapes or reconstructs a patient’s facial contours by either using a chin implant to enhance the chin or by surgically reducing the bone to diminish its size. Implants may be made of synthetic material, like silicone, or constructed of harvested donor tissues or the patient’s own bone from elsewhere in the body.
Chin surgery is sometimes performed in conjunction with a face lift or other cosmetic or reconstructive procedure. Often, a doctor will recommend chin surgery along with nose surgery (rhinoplasty) in order to gain a balanced appearance in a patient’s features.
Recovery and complications from chin surgery are similar to other facial cosmetic surgeries and include swelling, risk of infection, and implant displacement. Most patients can resume full activities after two to three weeks.
