Cosmetic Surgery Procedure Overview

Cosmetic SurgeryPlastic surgery encompasses both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. Cosmetic surgery is sometimes called aesthetic surgery, because it is done to improve a patient’s physical appearance and self-image. Reconstructive surgery is performed to restore form or function to damaged or maldeveloped body structures caused by trauma, disease, or other natural cause such as a congenital defect.

Reconstructive surgeries are often paid for by health insurance coverage; most cosmetic surgery is not covered by health plans. There are exceptions to this rule. For example, eyelid surgery may be covered if a patient’s loose skin is interfering with normal vision, and breast reduction surgery is often paid for due to the alternative consequences of chronic back pain and other negative health effects.

  • Abdominoplasty (“tummy tuck”): reshaping and firming of the abdomen by removal of skin and fatty tissues
  • Blepharoplasty (“eyelid surgery”): reshaping of the upper and/or lower eyelids by removal of fat deposits and loose skin
  • Mammoplasty:
    • Breast augmentation (“breast implant”): enhancement of the breasts through fat transfer or implantation of saline or silicone gel prosthetic devices
    • Reduction mammoplasty (“breast reduction”): removal of skin and glandular tissue to reduce the overall volume and weight of large breasts, usually done to reduce back and shoulder pain in women or to treat men with gynecomastia
    • Mastopexy (“breast lift”): reshaping of breasts to make them less saggy and counteract effects of aging, pregnancy, or weight loss
  • Buttock augmentation (“butt implant”): enhancement of the buttocks using silicone implants or fat grafting (“Brazilian butt lift”) and transfer from other areas of the body
  • Buttock lift: lifting and firming of the buttocks by removal of excess skin
  • Chemical peel: reducing appearance of facial scars and wrinkles, age spots and freckles, and other sun damage
  • Lip enhancement: surgical enlargement of lips through implants or injections
  • Rhinoplasty (“nose job”): reshaping the nose by modifying its length, width, or profile through surgical means
  • Otoplasty (“ear surgery”/”ear pinning”): reshaping of the ear by folding or removing cartilage, most often performed on adolescents
  • Rhytidectomy (“face lift”): reducing signs of aging by removal of facial wrinkles and tightening skin
  • Suction-assisted lipectomy (“liposuction”): removal of fat deposits from various areas of the body using suction
  • Chin augmentation (“chin implant”): reshaping the chin with an implant or by surgically altering the bone, often done in coordination with rhinoplasty
  • Cheek augmentation (“cheek implant”): reshaping the cheek with implants or injections
  • Dermal filler injections: reducing wrinkles and firming up skin by injecting collagen, fat, or synthetically created filler substances such as hyaluronic acid
  • Laser skin resurfacing: smoothing skin and removing blemishes, fine lines and wrinkles by removing skin layers with a laser
