As people age, the eyelid skin stretches, muscles weaken, and fat accumulates around the eyes, causing "bags" above and below.
Eyelid surgery, medically known as blepharoplasty, is a procedure to modify the appearance of the upper and/or lower eyelids. Skin and fat around the eye are removed or relocated for either cosmetic or functional purposes. The surgery may also involve modification or reconstruction of the muscles and tendons surrounding the eye area.
When performed as an elective, cosmetic procedure, eyelid surgery is used to improve the puffy appearance of “bags” under the eyes caused by fat deposits and remove excess skin in the upper eyelid. If the loose skin above the eyes interferes with normal peripheral vision, its removal is considered functional and is often covered by health insurance. Many patients enjoy permanent results after completing this procedure.
The blepharoplasty procedure is normally performed on an outpatient basis with local anesthesia. Incisions are made in the creases of the upper or lower eyelids, or occasionally inside the lower eyelid, depending on the extent of work being done. Then fat and/or skin are removed and incisions are sutured. Your doctor will give you specific instructions about what you can do during the recovery period, but temporary side effects include tearing, sensitivity to light, and blurred vision.
