How Does Liposuction Work?

Liposuction is a relatively simple process during which a qualified surgeon makes small incisions in or near the area to be treated. A sterile solution is injected into the areas to reduce trauma and to make tissue easier to remove. Then a cannula (a thin, hollow tube) is inserted into the incisions and connected to a suction device. Fat is dislodged from the target areas by the surgeon manipulating the cannula, and then fat and liquids are suctioned out.

There is normally some swelling and bruising that must heal after the liposuction process, but then you will be able to immediately see improvements in your body contours and profile. The results of liposuction can be long-lasting or even permanent if you maintain a balanced diet and regular exercise. If a patient has a large amount of fatty tissue removed, other procedures may be necessary to remove loose skin and other excess tissues after the liposuction process.

Liposuction Recovery and Complications

In order to speed the recovery process, be sure and follow your surgeon’s directions regarding rest and activity level after surgery, and when you can return to your normal activities and routine. It may take several months for swelling to completely subside, but you should be able to see positive results right away.

Some common complications from liposuction include unevenness or asymmetry, skin discoloration, loose skin, nerve or skin damage, scarring, bleeding, and swelling in the legs. Your doctor should provide you with more details and an assessment of how likely you are to experience these side effects.
