Keeping Skin Healthy and Young Looking

Retin-A Before TreatmentNon-surgical skin freshening treatments can be very effective solutions for patients who have little to moderate wrinkling or skin damage, who are put off by surgical procedures and recovery, or who are unable to afford surgical treatment. These treatments should not be confused with more invasive procedures such as dermabrasion and chemical peels, though they may obtain similar results for some patients.

Originally developed to combat the effects of severe acne, Retin-A® (scientifically known as tretinoin) is an acidic form of vitamin A. When used topically in a cream or gel, Retin-A thins the outer layer of skin and promotes collagen formation. Long-term use can help fade sunspots and other photodamage, diminish fine lines and wrinkles, and shrink the size of large skin pores.

Retin-A After Treatment

The appearance of fine facial wrinkles and sun damage can be improved with Retin-A® treatment.

Your doctor or other trained professional will instruct you on the exact usage of Retin-A, but it is usually applied daily before bedtime. Over time, the strength of the dosage may be increased as your skin becomes used to its effects, and the frequency of application is usually reduced after a year or so.

Risks and Complications of Retin-A

Use of Retin-A will make your face more vulnerable to the sun, so you’ll be instructed to always use sunscreen when outside to protect your skin from burning. When beginning a treatment process, many patients experience dry skin, itching, redness, or other irritation. These side effects nearly always go away after your skin becomes accustomed to the treatment. Pregnant women or those who are attempting to become pregnant should not undergo Retin-A treatment due to potential negative consequences to the fetus.

Retin-A is just one of several chemical treatments that can give your face a younger, smoother appearance. You should ask your doctor for details on this and other non-surgical treatments, such as glycolic acid. Though they won’t have as dramatic an effect as a facelift or other surgical procedure, many patients are extremely satisfied with their results.
