What is a Brow Lift (forehead lift)?

Let’s start with the basics

A forehead lift, or brow lift, is a cosmetic procedure performed to correct drooping eyebrows, deep “worry lines,” and other signs of aging and environmental exposure. It leads to a more youthful appearance by smoothing and tightening skin on the forehead while also repairing problems in patients with naturally low brows. Some patients will want to undergo eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) or other facial procedure concurrently with a brow lift so their features will have an equally youthful aspect.

Who are the Best Candidates for a Brow Lift?

Ideal candidates for a brow lift are individuals in their 40s or older. The brow line of these patients usually begins to droop, and noticeable wrinkles and fine lines may appear along the forehead. If the problem of drooping brows was inherited genetically, candidates in their 20s or 30s may also be right for this procedure.

The best candidates for a forehead lift are individuals who have a positive outlook and realistic expectations for the procedure. If you have heavy upper lids, sagging brows, and fine lines on your forehead, you may undergo a forehead lift. What to Expect the Day of your Forehead Lift

There are several methods for a surgeon to approach the forehead lift process, differentiated by the location of the incisions and surgical tools used. When using traditional surgical tools, a surgeon may make incisions within the eyebrows (direct brow lift), within forehead wrinkles (mid-forehead lift), or near the hairline from ear to ear (coronal or open forehead lift). No matter where the incisions are made, the objective is the same: to remove excess skin and underlying tissues, while in some cases using sutures to tighten the muscles and connective tissue beneath the skin. After removing unwanted material, the surgeon closes the incisions with sutures. A more modern and less invasive approach utilizes endoscopy to achieve similar results. With this technique, several small incisions are made behind the hairline to accommodate the endoscopic camera and surgical instruments. This method usually results in reduced, less noticeable scarring and a somewhat shorter recovery period.

What are the Risks Involved with a Forehead Lift?

Serious complications caused by brow lifts are rare but can entail facial nerve damage leading to loss of sensitivity and paralysis of facial muscles, infection, bruising and swelling, and, bleeding. In most cases, any negative effects are temporary and disappear within a few months.

Brow lifts are normally done as outpatient procedures, so you should be able to return home the day of the operation. You will likely need to stay home with your head elevated for a couple of days, and any stitches or staples will be removed in about a week’s time. Some pain and itching are normal aftereffects of both traditional and endoscopic procedures. Your surgeon should give you specific instructions on what to do and advice on how long your particular recovery may take.
