eyelid lift

You can tell a lot of things about looking into a person’s eyes, but one thing you shouldn’t be able to guess, is someone’s age. When the face begins to show signs of aging, the eyes are one of the first places sagging tissue will be seen. The lax skin and fine, crepe paper winkling can add years to one’s appearance. The face may take on a sad, exhausted, and unhealthy look. As the eyes are often the focal point of the facial features, these early signs of aging are immediately noticeable to others.

Expensive makeup and eye creams may claim to work small miracles, but the only way to restore a youthful appearance is through a surgical procedure called a Blepharoplasty, also known as an Eyelid Lift.

The Blepharoplasty Procedure

As we age, the delicate skin around the eye begins to lose its shape, and sinks downward. Not only does this result in wrinkles, the drooping tissue may even impair the vision. The muscles and fatty tissue under the lower eyelid can slowly untether from their youthful position, forming ‘bags’ under the eyes. Shadows from this puffy or sunken tissue can cause the appearance of dark circles under the eyes.

A Blepharoplasty is designed to smooth and lift the tissues of the upper and lower eyelids. After the procedure, the eyes will look refreshed and rejuvenated. Years will be immediately taken off of the appearance. As the excess skin is removed and the remaining tissue is tightened, they eyes will once again look open and awake.

Factors Contributing to Aging Eyes:

  • Sun Damage
  • Smoking
  • Aging
  • Genetics
  • Extreme Weight Loss

The Eyelid Lift Procedure

Dr. Lohner’s Eyelid Lift will take between one and two hours to complete, depending on the level of correction required. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, using either general anesthesia or a local anesthesia with IV sedation. The upper and lower lids can be addressed independently, or both can be performed during one surgery. Dr. Lohner can also suggest complimentary procedures that can be combined with the Blepharoplasty, most commonly fat grafting or injections of Botox or fillers, to provide the maximum benefits and the lifted, invigorated aesthetic look you desire.

The Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty

An upper Eyelid Lift focuses on the sagging tissue immediately above the eyes. Excess skin will be eliminated, and the remaining tissues will be raised to a youthful position.

  • Utilizes a well-hidden incision placed within the natural crease of the eyelid.
  • Through the incision, excess skin and fat will be removed, to define the eyelid.
  • Usually an imperostable scar will appear in the crease of the eyelid, which is usually quite inconspicuous.

The Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty

A lower Eyelid Lift is usually a bit more complicated. It is designed to smooth the fine lines under the eye, lift the lax tissues, and add replace the lost volume that causes ‘bags’ and dark circles.

  • Utilizes a small incision just below the lower eyelashes, or along the inner portion of the lower lid.
  • From the incision, excess tissue is removed and the fat pad repositioned.
  • Tissues will be pulled taut.
  • Volume under the eye can be replaced through a fat transfer.
  • For most patients, scarring under the eyelid or within the lower lid is usually minimal and is well concealed within the natural contours of the skin.

How You Can Prepare for an Upcoming Blepharoplasty

Do not think that your work is complete just because your consultation appointment has passed, and your Blepharoplasty has been scheduled. There are still extremely important tasks to be completed. You will need to arrange for a ride home from the surgery center, pick up all prescriptions at the pharmacy, get your follow-up appointments on the calendar, and grab extra supplies for a comfortable recovery, such as icepacks and extra pillows. You will need to carefully read all of Dr. Lohner’s pre/post-operative instructions. If any questions should arise, contact the office immediately.

The Risks Involved with a Blepharoplasty

Dr. Lohner’s Blepharoplasty is considered one of the safest and most effective treatments available today. However, as it is an invasive procedure, there is always a small risk for complications. Problems that can be associated with an Eyelid Lift include a hematoma, bleeding, lower lid sagging (ectropion), infection, and extremely rarely, blindness. To minimize the chance for serious complications after a Blepharoplasty, patients should put their trust in an experienced, well-trained Plastic Surgeon. Dr. Lohner has over twenty years of experience and is Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Recovering from an Eyelid Lift

Patients should expect the recovery after a Blepharoplasty to last between seven and fourteen days. If a lower eyelid tightening procedure is required (Canthopexy or Canthoplasty) Recovery remains sensitive in the corner of the eyelid can remain for 4 to 6 weeks. During this time, they may notice some mild bruising and swelling, although these are generally minimal. Little pain will be experienced, but temporary tightness and soreness across the upper or lower eyelid is common.

To check on the healing process, a follow-up appointment will be scheduled with Dr. Lohner approximately five days after surgery. Patients normally feel well enough to return to work or school in three to five days after their surgery. Vigorous exercise and strenuous activities should be postponed for at least four weeks.
